Our Accessibility Statement

Our accessibility statement applies to the web-based microsites/learning & knowledge assessment platform operated by www.brain-candy.co.uk and hosted via our associated subdomains.

Using this website

The web-based platform(s) & microsites run by Brain Candy Ltd require a unique username and password to gain access to the learning and knowledge assessment(s) contained therein. Therefore, these sites are not available to the general public. However, we strive to meet and, in some cases, exceed accessibility standards. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website/application using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website/application using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also made our platform(s) & microsites text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible are our websites & microsites?

We know some parts of our websites / microsites aren’t fully accessible. However, we do release regular improvements and plan to address many of those identified  below:

  • Text may have colour contrast issues
  • New browser windows opening may not be announced to screen readers
  • Some time limits may not be adjustable
  • On some pages, the heading may use incorrect HTML elements
  • Some content is not correctly held in sections
  • Some tables may not have headings
  • Tables may be used for layout – particularly data / results
  • Some text may be stored as images
  • Links or buttons do not have descriptive text
  • Some button labels may not be announced correctly to screen readers
  • Some input fields may have placeholders instead of labels
  • Pagination links may not announce themselves correctly
  • Screen readers may announce hidden content incorrectly

There may be other undocumented issues present on our website or ancillary domains. We continually work towards documenting and resolving these issues and will release them to our websites when they are complete.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Although a private limited company, Brain Candy is committed to making its websites and web applications accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

Our website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA & AAA standards due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Colour Contrast

There are a limited number of colour contrast issues between foreground text and background colours in some areas. Due to the nature of a learning & assessment platform, common colour usage such as Red, Amber, Green feedback sections may need greater contrast than is currently available.

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

We provide a single type of PDF document for a very limited number of users, and these PDF files are generated at run time on an ad-hoc basis. These one-time generated / exportable PDF documents use the same settings as the main web application and usually meet the accessibility requirements. However, as this functionality relies on the end user’s browser, older and non-supported browsers may not generate accessibility compliant PDF documents.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We continually work to resolve all identified accessibility issues within our control and provide regular website and microsite / platform releases to address these issues. Changes are released multiple times per year as issues and solutions are made available.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 19th December 2021 by Brain Candy and will be reviewed again on or before 31st March 2022.

The website and web applications outlined above were last audited in October 2021. The audit was carried out using an independent UK-based 3rd party testing organisation using a combination of manual and automated testing across a representative sample of pages and template types.
